Actually they do serve a purpose. They consume dead skin. They are very small... microscopic... in fact 10 of these evil looking creatures can fit on the end of a pen.The Dust mite lives a short life, 10-15 days usually. They do not bite people or animals, do not spread disease in that way. They do, however, create waste pellets that we can be allergic to. These are often a cause of asthma and other allergy symptoms, coughing, runny nose, sneezing headaches.
Dust mites are fairly easy to clean up generally. Regular washing of bed clothes, vacuuming, dusting and wiping of home surface areas. In the summer when people often have open windows, the mites and their feces are easily blown off furniture and tracked outside. We are more often impacted by them in the winter when homes are closed up and kept warmer and we spend more time in doors.
